Amir Khan : Hit Third Champ Belt

Jago Amir Khan

So Amir Khan doesn’t have the chin to win?

In one career-defining round, Khan proved that is as big a myth as Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

It is hard to imagine any other fighter taking the relentless barrage of blows Khan took from Marcos Maidana in the 10th without going down.

At one point, Khan’s legs turned to spaghetti, but somehow he summoned the resolve to stay up and hang on to his WBA light-welterweight title.

Technically, it was far from the flawless performance Freddie Roach had predicted and the impetuous Khan strayed from the game plan of working behind the jab and hitting Maidana from the angles.

But forget all that because, more importantly, Khan finally proved he can take a punch.

It is a charge which has hung over Khan, long before Breidis Prescott destroyed him inside 54 seconds in September 2008, going back to when Craig Watson put him on his backside at Preston Guildhall in the ABAs in February 2005.

During a brief press conference before he was taken for a precautionary CAT scan, a vindicated Khan claimed he had finally silenced his critics with his gutsy performance.

“Maidana is a strong puncher,” he said. “He hit me with some big shots and my chin was tested, but I proved I’ve got a chin. I took everything he gave me.

“Those people who say Amir Khan can’t take a shot, I’ve proved to them that I can. I’m sure I’ve shut a lot of people up.”

Khan, 24, put his pal David Haye through the mill during that 10th round and the WBA heavyweight champ said: “He took some of the biggest shots in the world and came back and won the fight.

“He showed his toughness and grit and I’m really proud of him. Absolutely amazing!

“He showed more heart and guts than a lot of people thought he had. The training he has been doing with Freddie Roach and the sparring with Manny Pacquiao mean he knows how to weather the storm.

“Things he didn’t know to get through the Prescott fight, he knows now. That’s why he is the champion of the world.”

This most dramatic of fights in front of a disappointing crowd at the Mandalay Bay got off to a great start when Khan crumpled the challenger with a right and a left to the body to put him on the canvas in the first. He then checked Maidana with a couple of left hooks before the Argentinian started landing his sledgehammer right to take the third round.

Khan was in control and Maidana had a point deducted by Joe Cortez in the fifth for hitting with his elbow before he suffered a cut above his right eye.

Just when Maidana looked out on his feet, he mounted a comeback midway through the contest, catching Khan with a succession of upper cuts and a real haymaker of a right. Then came the 10th, when Maidana caught Khan with a right to the side of the head and the champ desperately clung on as he was battered for most of the round.

Roach considered pulling him out, but somehow Khan survived and even produced a flurry in the dying seconds.

The judges scored it 114-111 (twice) and 113-112 to Khan and the Bolton fighter remains on track for a crack at the winner of Devon Alexander’s clash with Timothy Bradley next month to see who is the king of the 140-pounders.

American WBO king Bradley was at ringside and said: “It was close, but he won the fight and showed what a warrior he is.

“The 140lbs division is crowded with great fighters and I don’t know who’s best. We’ll have to wait until the fights happen to see.”

Afghanistan Protests Over Florida Quran Burning Enter Third Day

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan protests against the burning of a Quran in Florida entered a third day with a demonstrations in the south and east Sunday, while the Taliban called on people to rise up, blaming government forces for any violence.

The desecration at a small U.S. church has outraged Muslims worldwide, and in Afghanistan many of the demonstrations have turned into deadly riots. Protests in the north and south in recent days have killed 20 people.

In southern Kandahar city on Sunday, hundreds took to the streets for the second day in a row, and hospital officials said 20 people were hurt in skirmishes between police and demonstrators. On Saturday, nine people were killed and 80 injured when a protest turned into a riot.

At least two wounded police officers and 18 civilians had been brought into city hospitals, said Qayum Pokhla the provincial health director.

A morning protest in Jalalabad city was peaceful, with hundreds of people blocking a main highway for three hours, shouting for U.S. troops to leave and burning an effigy of President Barack Obama before dispersing, according to an Associated Press photographer at the scene.

A similar protest in eastern Parwan province blocked a main highway with burning tires for about an hour, with more than 1,000 people protesting against the desecration of the Quran, said provincial police chief Sher Ahmad Maladani. He said there was no violence.

The violence started Friday when demonstrators stormed a U.N. compound in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, killing 11 people including seven foreign U.N. employees.

The Taliban said in a statement emailed to media outlets that the U.S. and other Western countries have wrongly excused the burning a Quran by the pastor of a Florida church on March 20 as freedom of speech and that Afghans “cannot accept this un-Islamic act.”

NATO officials re-iterated their condemnation of the Quran burning in an apparent attempt to quell the rising anger.
