Pakistan celebrates series whitewash over England

Pakistan has become the first team in more than a century to win a Test cricket match after scoring fewer than 100 in its first innings.

Pakistan beat England by 71 runs in Dubai on Tuesday to complete a clean-sweep of the three-Test series.

It is the first time the sub-continental side has whitewashed England in a Test series.

Spinner Saeed Ajmal picked up 4 for 67 and paceman Umar Gul grabbed 4 for 61 as the world’s top-ranked Test team was bowled out for 252.

Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq says he’s lost for words in explaining his side’s brilliant performance.

“Thanks to Allah for this victory, and I think a wonderful performance by the team, and I just can’t say anything about that I just can’t explain this in words, I think that really really this victory means a lot to us,” he said.

“Our bowlers did an excellent job this series.

“This result shows we are a powerful team. After getting bowled out for 99 in the first innings nobody thought we could come back but Pakistan are starting to really do well under pressure.”

Strauss praised Pakistan, especially their spinners Saeed Ajmal who took 24 wickets in the series and Abdul Rehman who finished with 18.

“You need to give Pakistan huge amount of credit because their two spinners were very impressive and made life difficult for ourselves and when we did get in front of them in Tests they were able to wrest the initiative back in their favour,” said Strauss.

Strauss denied his team ever took Pakistan lightly.

“We never underestimated Pakistan, they have played lot of good cricket in the last 12-18 months, we knew that their spinners were good enough and they played outstandingly, they are well led and very tight and cohesive unit and that’s important for a side to play consistently.”

Pakistan and England will play a Four-match one day and 3 match T-20 series after the tests.

As he complained of breathing trouble, his family members, who were also present in the stands, carried him out of the stadium and rushed him to the hospital, less than 1km from the venue.

“No case is being registered as it was a natural death. It was a coincidence that he was in the stadium then when he felt uneasy as he was not able to breathe properly. It’s sad,” Mr Gowda added.
