Afridi’s super form continues as Pak crush Bangladesh

Published

DAMBULLA: Riding on his good form, Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi scored the sixth fastest ODI century (124 in 60 balls) here on Monday. He thrashed a hapless Bangladesh bowling attack and guided his team to 385 for 7, their highest total in an ODI.

In reply, Bangladesh could manage only 246 for 5 and lost the match by 139 runs. It was only Junaid Siddique ( 97 off 14 balls) who showed the guts to fight for Bangladesh.

Afridi’s innings was all about explosive power as he cut, drove, pulled and hooked his way to a century in only 53 balls. This was Afridi’s second century in the ongoing Asia Cup and the fastest in the tournament. Before Afridi’s Monday knock, India’s Suresh Raina had the distinction of scoring the fastest ton in the Asia Cup (100 off 68 balls) in 2008 against Hong Kong in Karachi.

Afridi now also has the maximum sixes in ODIs (272) under his belt after Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (270).

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that was ideal for stroke-making. Pakistan rested some of their top batsmen like Salman Butt and Shoaib Malik. However, that had no impact on their batting as openers Imran Farhat and Shahzaib Hasan gave them a rousding start and after that Afridi joined the fun.

Afridis 50 came off 35 balls and then he then took only 18 balls to complete his century. In the second fifty, he slammed 10 fours and a six. In all, he struck 17 boundaries and four sixes to make 124 at a strike-rate of 206.66.

Pakistan’s 100 came in the 17th over and it appeared that their batsmen were out to vent their frustration after losing two close matches – against Sri Lanka and India. Besides Afridi’s blitz, his fifth-wicket stand with Umar Akmal (33) was another striking feature of the Pakistan innings.

By the time, Pakistan reached 300 in 43.1 overs, the match was already out of Bangladesh’s reach.

Pakistan were the last team to overcome Australia at a World Cup and brought Ricky Ponting’s 34-match unbeaten run to an end with a four-wicket victory in Colombo to secure top spot in Group A. An impressive display in the field laid the foundations as the reigning champions were bundled out for 176 on a difficult surface, their lowest total in a World Cup since 1992, and despite a mighty effort from Brett Lee they were guided home by Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq.

However , Aussies are always to be a great team to comeback. And , this come back will might effect India in quarter finals.

“The adrenaline will certainly be flowing and playing in front of their home crowd in Ahmedabad will be exciting and a challenge for us,” Nielsen Australian Coach said. “We’ve got no fear now; we know we’re in the knockout stage.

“It’s exciting … a mini-grand final in itself. If you came here and thought, ‘What would be the best result? It would be great to make the final against India’. Well, we’ve got our final against India in the next few days. I’m sure if we’re on our game, they won’t necessarily be looking forward to playing against us. That’s something in our favour.”
